GO VOTE!

ALL IN TO VOTE!
Social Media Callout post
2 Weeks deadline
Informative not Conformative
The Challenge >>>
The task is to reach the youngest generation of voters—first-time voters, new parents, and those who are becoming more aware of social issues, typically ranging from 18 to 25 years old.

Young people are very caught up in their own busy lives and have little to no time or patience to think about what goes on around them.
The Solution >>>
We need to find a way to encourage this new generation, absorbed in their fast-paced social media craze, to pay attention and become involved in voting.

I want to create a simple, looping social media post that motivates and engages young voters who often scroll before even registering what they see.

Research >>>
In 2022, only 23% of the nation's youth turned out to vote. This means that a very small portion of the youngest generation had a say in the future of their country.
Starting with the ideals of the organization "All In To Vote," which promotes non-partisan views, I had the opportunity to encourage youth to unite and vote rather than divide based on political differences.
I appreciated how the organization provides resources and information on how, when, and where to vote.

I wanted to use a simple call to action that provides all the necessary information to vote and feels official, creating a sense of security and reliability in registering to vote.

Ideation >>>
What do ya want to see?
Young people today face unique challenges—whether it’s student debt, job insecurity, or mental health struggles. The list goes on, but how do you communicate with someone who is dealing with such issues?

I wanted to highlight these struggles to create a message that voting can give them a voice, choosing someone to listen to their concerns and address their worries.

Concept 1 - Sisyphus
This idea was based on the mythology of Sisyphus. I wanted to address the never-ending struggles that the younger generation feels weighs heavily on them.

This concept was ultimately selected, though it still needed some refinement because the visual metaphor wasn’t coming through clearly. However, the message was more engaging.

Concept 2 - Easy Access
This concept was centered around the idea of waiting in line. I wanted young people to know that voting doesn’t take a long time, especially since they’re typically willing to wait in line for many other things.

The issue, however, is that people do often wait in line at polling booths—a lot. Silly me.

Sisyphus Progress
I created a character to represent Sisyphus so the idea could be more literally displayed on the screen. I wanted to maintain a heavy contrast in the colors to match the Grecian style.

The text was made significantly bolder to ensure it could be easily read on phone screens of all sizes. Not everyone has a monster phone.
The story also took on a hand character to alleviate the stress and better convey the message that "voting is not hard."

Motion Testing >>>
The animation is designed to be simple and clean, with text that reads clearly without clashing with the other elements, which are involved in more complex movements.

The most tedious part of this animation was making Sisyphus fall over after the rock is lifted. He was very uncooperative!

First Pass
This was a rough pass of all the elements in motion, and the music was also completely different.
Some of the notes I received were to punch up the texture and to speed up the boulder rolling down at the start to match the pace at the end.
Second Pass
The music was still in the scratch phase, but the animation was starting to come together.
My main notes were to reduce the jitter of the letters, add some texture over the white shapes, and make the hand less distracting when it's still.

Final Motion Tests
After all the note were addressed and the touch ups made, I finally completed the three segments that create the "Life Is Hard" social media call out!

Technical Stuff
This animation is simple since there was a very short deadline. I Optimized some of my processes to save time. I created the animation in After Effects I used some coding to have a self animating texture and letter jitter.
I wanted to focus more on conveying the message for something that would translate well onto a screen and hold attention without being to small or busy that you could not focus on the message.

Simple is good!
Sticky Fingers
The hand was created using multiple stroke paths. I created the fingers by altering the anchor points and parenting those to the main arm to create false knuckles.

I wanted it to feel a bit loose but still have that strong silhouette effect that the style creates.

Results >>>
I found this project to be an excellent lesson in how to effectively convey a message, not just through visual design, but also by incorporating movement and sound.
