Medium Explainer
Team Project
5 Week deadline
Explainer Video
The Challenge
We need to create a way to demonstrate the point of an article on medium. We need to be able to condense information and make it digestible and enjoyable for people who don't have the time or patience to read a full article.
The Solution
We will create a short explainer video that will be at the start of the article to garner attention and interest in the topic.

Research
Medium is a source that is a mix of the ideas of academic articles mixed with articles that have the most abstract of concepts. We wanted to make sure our imagery was refined as well as fun to look at.

We decided to go with the article about the benefits of boredom.
Ideation
Script
you’re standing in line at the grocery store.
The person ahead of you is fumbling with coupons. Your phone is dead.
What the fuck are you supposed to do now? Actually, wait? Like some kind of savage?
A study found nearly half of people would rather shock themselves than sit alone for 15 minutes. We have a serious problem with boredom.
Boredom isn’t empty time; It’s not just the absence of stimulation, it’s a signal that we’re not meaningfully engaged. The goal isn’t to be bored constantly, it’s just to stop reflexively avoiding boredom at all costs.
So, how do you embrace boredom? Start small. Leave your phone behind for an hour. Take a walk. It might feel uncomfortable, but stick with it. You never know what you might find.
Don’t fight boredom; Go forth and be fucking bored.

Concept 1 - Surface Level
Using a mix of 2D and contrasting 3D elements, we are more engaged with our immediate surroundings when we are bored. Outlined objects emphasize leaving outside distraction behind.
Concept 2 - Overstimulated
The more and more we try to find outside distractions, endlessly scrolling. Our brains become extra packed with muddy information. Here, sharp, angled, and textured shapes poke their way into our once clear minded thoughts.
Motion Testing
There were multiple passes of animation thought this project, I want to highlight the animatic portion and the first animation pass that had all the styleframes.

Animatic
The animatic was our guide throughout this whole project, making sure each frame was the correct length and making adjustments to the animations as we went along to make sure we stayed true to our audio.
Animation Pass
There were a lot of check point for us, this pass is from around the mid point of the project. I think we had hit a good point and had a good idea of moving forward.
3D & 2D marriage
The usage of 2D and 3D allows for a lot of creative room in how we imagined the 3D models looking. We aimed for a more graphic cartoonist style of 3D.
Model Creations
Each Model is made by us, we did not use any preset assets throughout our project because each piece had to match our desired style.

Here are some of the Chess piece models I made for our project.

Turn Around
A look at the cart model I designed in the beginning frame.
It was fun trying new ways to create a 2D style object in a 3D space, I think in the end it looks pretty cute for a little shopping cart!
Final Render
Take Away :]
This was a great experience of working with a partner. Being able to know how to split the work and learning to collaborate and bring new ideas to the table always makes for a fun experience. While this was a hard project, I think the end result was pretty fun!
